A handheld drill can be used for smaller holes under 1 inch. Large Forstner bits require significant downward pressure and can twist the operator's wrist if they catch, so a drill press is strongly recommended for large diameters.
Burning occurs due to high friction, typically because the drill speed is too high for the bit diameter or chips are not cleared frequently. Use slower speeds for larger bits and lift the bit periodically to clear chips.
Choose a carbide Forstner bit for frequent drilling in MDF, melamine, or plywood. The adhesives and resins in engineered woods are abrasive and can quickly dull carbon-steel or HSS bits.
"Fostner drill bit" is a common misspelling of Forstner drill bit, named after 19th-century inventor Benjamin Forstner.
